A Stafford Prep School athlete is eyeing a national cross country title following a runaway victory at a regional competition in Shropshire.
Eleven-year-old Daisy Aspinall produced a cross country masterclass in the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) Midlands championships at Bedstone College. The Cannock and Stafford AC member overcame a congested starting line-up of 100 competitors and broke through to the leading pack. Having shadowed the front runner for the first half of the 1800m course, Daisy stepped up the pace and forged a comfortable lead, even overtaking the host school’s older race pacemaker who had set off ahead of the field to show them the route.
The Stafford Prep (SPS) youngster pressed her advantage and finished more than 20 seconds ahead of her nearest rival. She will target a repeat performance when she challenges the best athletes across the country at the ISA national championships next month at Warwickshire’s Princethorpe College.
