Tennis starlets serve up Midlands success
Stafford tennis starlets led the way in the hunt for titles at an under-11 regional competition in Stoke-on-Trent.
The Stafford Preparatory School quartet netted three medals, including two golds, at the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) Midlands championships.
Ten-year-old Amber Smit took the scalps of older opponents as she dominated the girls’ draw and romped to the top of the table without dropping a game. Amber, who trains at Tipton Sports Academy, chalked up a string of 5-0 victories at Florence Tennis and Bowling Club to win the tournament. The Year 5 player will be eligible to defend her crown next season, but in the meantime will turn her attention to the junior summer circuit.
Stafford Prep team mate Rory Sandy also remained undefeated in all six matches to cruise to the gold medal in the boys’ competition. Eleven-year-old Rory is coached at Stafford’s Baseline Tennis Centre. Ten-year-old Ollie Moody won four of his matches to become a bronze medalist, while 11-year-old Karina Edwards completed the SPS line-up.
The round-robin event attracted teams from neighbouring counties, with each singles match involving the best of five games.
